People ask this at a check-in desk with a queue behind them, and the agent's answer is usually a shrug, because the agent's job is the flight, not your passport. The actual answer is yes, with two variables: where in the airport you are, and how much time there is. This guide covers both, from the simple case of a spouse in a car to the awkward one of a traveler stuck between two flights with the passport in a hotel in another country.
If you are before security: yes, and it is straightforward
Before security means the public part of the terminal: the check-in hall, the departures concourse, the cafes and the curb. Anyone can walk in and meet you there. Pick a place that is easy to find and say on the phone: a numbered check-in area, an information desk, a named coffee shop. The person bringing the passport should have your phone number and you theirs, and both of you should expect the airport's mobile coverage to be worse than it looks.
Who brings it is up to you. A partner or a friend with a car is the fastest for a same-city distance. If nobody can leave where the passport is, a courier can collect it and bring it to the terminal; DocumentJet does this, and within one city it is a matter of hours. The courier will call when close and hand it to you against your name.
If you are past security: often possible
Once you are past security, a friend with your passport cannot simply walk in. A courier who arrives by plane is different: they land inside the secure area like any passenger, and at many airports can walk to the transfer area or your gate and hand it to you there. If the passport is coming by road instead, three things can still work. The airline you are flying with may agree to take the passport from the person in the public area and walk it to you at the gate, especially if you are their passenger and the alternative is an empty seat; this is a favor, not a policy, and depends on the station. Some airports have a transfer desk or airport-operator staff who accept a document in the public area and deliver it to a named passenger behind security against a boarding pass. And if you are being held by border control, officers can, at their discretion, accept the passport on your behalf.
For a transit passenger the details depend on the airport. DocumentJet's Operations Center checks with the airline or the airport before the courier is dispatched and tells you how the handover will work. If no handover inside the airport is possible, the passport can still be delivered to a hotel near the airport once you have been allowed out, which at most airports a transit passenger without a passport cannot simply do. Ask the airline that brought you in for the station manager; they are responsible for you and will have handled this before.

How much time you really have
International check-in cutoff
Usually 45 to 60 minutes before departure, sometimes 90. After that the flight is closed to you whatever arrives.
Security and walk to gate
Fifteen minutes on a good day, an hour on a bad one. The passport must be in your hand before all of this.
A car across a large city
One to two hours each way, more at peak times. Add parking and finding you.
A courier collecting in the same city
A few hours from booking to the terminal, including confirmation and pickup.
A courier flying in from another country
Same calendar day westbound across the Atlantic, next morning eastbound. Not a same-flight solution.
What to do, in order
01
Rebook first
Go to the airline desk now and move to a later flight, ideally one that leaves after the passport can realistically arrive plus an hour. Tell them why. A passenger who explains gets a rebooking; a passenger who disappears is a no-show and may lose the fare.
02
Get the passport moving
Call whoever is nearest to it. If it is a person, agree on a meeting point before security. If it is a courier, book with the airport as the destination and give the terminal, the flight and your phone number.
03
Stay reachable
Unless we have arranged a handover behind security, do not go through security to wait in a lounge. Keep your phone charged and answer unknown numbers; couriers and airline staff will call from them.
04
When it arrives, check it
It is not unusual for the wrong passport to arrive from a drawer with several in it. Look at the photo and the expiry date before the person leaves.
Who is allowed to carry someone else's passport?
In most countries, anyone the holder has authorized: a family member, a friend, an employee, a courier. The passport is carried as an item and is not used by the carrier for anything. Rules vary by issuing country and by the countries a passport passes through, which is why a courier service crossing borders with it checks the specific route before accepting the job, and may ask the holder for a written authorization. Within a city, on the way to an airport, a note from you is more than enough.
What having the passport does not settle
Whether the airline still boards you, whether a connection is held, whether a border officer admits you. Those are decisions made by the people at the counter. A delivered passport gives you the document; it does not make the decision for them, and no courier can.
Questions people ask about this
My friend is stuck at an airport because they forgot their passport. Can you help?
In many cases, yes. During booking, select “At an airport” under “Who should receive it?” and provide information about the traveler and their situation. Depending on the airport and local procedures, we may be able to deliver the passport directly to the traveler in the public area of the terminal, behind security or in the transit area, or to an airline representative, immigration or border authorities or airport personnel. Because our courier usually arrives by air, they are already behind security when they land, which often makes a direct handover possible. Access rules vary by airport and country, so the exact handover method is determined by our Operations Center. DocumentJet provides transportation only and cannot guarantee any immigration, border-entry or airline outcome.
Can you deliver a passport directly to someone who is already in transit at an airport?
Often, yes. A courier who arrives by air lands inside the secure area and at many airports can hand the passport to a transit passenger directly. Where that is not possible, certain airports allow documents to be transferred through airline, airport, immigration or border-control personnel. Airport procedures vary, and DocumentJet cannot guarantee access to every area of every airport. Our Operations Center will determine the most appropriate handover method after reviewing the booking.
Can someone else legally carry my passport?
In many countries, a passport may be transported by an authorized third party, including a courier. However, rules concerning possession and transportation of passports can differ between countries and can also depend on the passport's issuing country and the countries through which it is transported. DocumentJet only confirms bookings where the intended transportation can be performed in accordance with the applicable operational and legal requirements known to us. The courier does not use the passport for travel or identification. It is transported solely as the customer's document.
How quickly can you pick up my document?
In many major cities, a flight courier can be at the pickup location within a few hours. The exact pickup timeframe depends on where the nearest suitable courier is located. If no courier is available nearby, we may need to position one to the pickup city by car, train or air. Your estimated pickup window is shown as part of your instant quote before booking.
